Bodies of Water and New York City's Communities

My Community

From its early use as a Lenape fishing ground, to its settlement by Dutch and English explorers, and into the 21st century, New York City's growth has been tied to its closeness to an abundance of waterways. An accessible narrative—supported by detailed color photographs and primary source illustrations—explores the historical impact of New York City's bodies of water. Students will learn about the influence that the waterways continue to have in today's urban community. Supports New York City's Grade 2 social studies standard for Unit 1: Our Community's Geography 3.1b, 3.1c, 3.2a.
